U S paratroopers abandoned Fire Base Ripcord after mounting casualties in a three week battle with North Vietnamese forces. Thirty-two Americans were killed on patrol and during evacuation, with 61 dead and 345 wounded in the area. The withdrawal came as reinforcements faced mounting losses amid prolonged heavy fire.
Basic trainees at Fort Dix New Jersey and Fort Ord California will be inoculated with a promising meningitis vaccine. About 9,000 U.S. trainees at Fort Dix are to be vaccinated by Saturday, with plans to extend to Fort Ord in another high rate area for the disease.
