Unruh Warns of Deep Trouble If Convention Is Closed
California Assembly Speaker Jesse M. Unruh says the 174 vote Democratic convention delegation faces deep trouble in November unless President Johnson and Vice President Humphrey allow broad party views. He criticizes Johnson control and warns a closed convention could injure the party ahead of the August 26 start. Unruh questions Humphrey’s independence and notes he may back the nominee despite flaws. He also rebukes Reagan for Wallace praise and cites Wallace’s racial policy.
