The Chowchilla Water District receives a four million dollar federal drought relief loan the first issued in California under the Emergency Drought Act of 1977 State Treasurer Jess Unruh says half the funds will be used to dig new wells and bolster water supply.
Mars winds lifted a planetwide dust storm observed by Viking spacecraft in February and March. Scientists say multiple storms can occur in a Martian year, with gusts up to 135 mph over rough terrain and dust persisting after the winds subside due to the dry atmosphere.
NASA project officials at Jet Propulsion Laboratory report Viking orbiters continue to operate and send back about 100 photographs daily. The two landers in Martian northern latitudes are active at reduced levels with biology experiments off, still capturing weather data and occasional images of the dust storm.
An explosion at a rocket fuel plant in Potrero Hills injured Dennis Rhodes, 28, a fabricator for Explosives Technology. He inhaled smoke and was taken to a Fairfield hospital after a silo and metal shed collapsed in the blast. Firefighters quickly responded and contained the fire to nearby structures. No fatalities were reported.
A tentative agreement, reached five minutes before a scheduled Thursday strike, avert ed a walkout by workers at the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco Examiner. A federal mediator announced the settlement as crews prepared to picket the papers.
