A local editor slams Edison Co for drastic 1974 profit gains and a 1976 revenue surge sought via a 21 percent increase. The column argues monopoly power and seeks hard cost facts, describing an assumed meter reading case of Frank E. Cunningham and urging consumer groups to investigate Edison’s practices.
The article recounts a dispute where Cunningham was overcharged after a meter reading could not be performed, with Edison issuing a 48 cent refund and a 3.16 dollar charge for under reading. Consumer frustration grows over the power of utilities and lack of explanation from Edison’s executive, Jack K Horton. Nearby, Nina Bennis and partner Jerry Benzi run Glide’er Inn offering low priced seafood and meals since 1930s. Julian Garza reports.
