Long Beach golfer Dick Carmody aims for PGA Tour in 1970
Dick Carmody, USC alumnus and Long Beach golfer, gains new backers and aims to join the PGA Tour in 1970 after a sparse year in 1969. He earned $390 in the Los Angeles Open, made the 200-pro field via Monday qualifying, and hopes to cash in by consistently making cuts as he seeks backers from Las Vegas. Other local pros like Dennis Murphy and Ken Hilsworth also list Long Beach or nearby areas as home while pursuing tour success. The 1970 tour prize fund totals $6.85 million with many $100,000-plus purses.
