A power failure blacked out more than 1,400 Carson area homes and businesses for almost an hour Thursday. The outage began about 4 30 p m and affected the area from Normandy Avenue to Main Street between 215th and 28th Streets. The blackout was caused by a malfunction in an electrical power cable.
Welfare fraud in California costs taxpayers around 59 million annually per a June 1969 study. Department director Robert Martin left that 15.75 percent of welfare recipients knowingly cheated to boost aid. Fraud often involves concealing a family’s total income or not reporting a man in the home as a spouse. The June 1969 findings covered over one million inquiries across about 275,000 families on welfare.
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird warns about roughly 1.25 million Americans losing work as the Nixon administration plans manpower cuts in the next defense budget. Las Vegas UPI Jean Peters wife of industrialist Howard Hughes announced she will seek a divorce after 13 years of marriage. She gave a brief statement saying the decision was not reached in haste and that any property settlement would be handled privately. Peters, 43, has been based in Beverly Hills while Hughes, 64, lived largely in Las Vegas.
Tension ebbed at California State College at Long Beach as students seeking reinstatement of two sociology professors clashed with authorities after a concession by administration and a $150,000 settlement. A temporary restraining order in Los Angeles barred further mass demonstrations, while Acting President Simonsen refused to rescind the suspensions of Dr. Don Robertson and Prof. Marion Steele. Robertson and Steele planned a final class meeting off campus, and later met Simonsen for 10 minutes as students protested.
