Utility Price Curbs Relax for Most Regulated Firms
Washington reports the Price Commission issued new rules letting most publicly regulated utilities and industries raise rates without initial approval starting Jan 17. Prenotification is required only from firms grossing $100 million or more, narrowing the prior $30 million threshold. utilities under $100 million lose direct controls but must keep records. The changes apply to railroads, airlines, transit, trucking and gas and electric utilities. all increases must reflect higher costs and aim to maintain service, capital attraction, and credit. Unregulated utilities must notify only when price hikes raise annual revenues by over 2.5 percent.

Attorney general must OK wiretap use rules court
A federal appeals court held that wiretap plans in criminal investigations must be properly authorized by the attorney general or a specially designated assistant. The ruling reversed six Miami defendants’ narcotics convictions, ordering the indictment dismissed due to improper wiretap authorization. Defendants included J W Robinson and Maria Escandar among others. The court stressed Congress intended personal presidentially approved oversight for wiretap authorizations.

Suburbs Set to Dominate U S Congress by 2000
A government projection by Richard Lehne from the Department of Housing and Urban Development predicts suburban areas will hold about 60 percent of House seats by 2000, up from 18 percent in 1950, while central cities drop to around 13 percent. The shift reflects growth in metropolitan constituencies and a move toward members from mega areas.
