Richter Plans Busy Raceway Slate For Season
Riverside Raceway under Jes Richter plans its busiest season in seven years with four major events. The schedule includes an April 26 USAC sports car race at Riverside, a mid June Hot Pod Magazine drag date, a four month improvement phase, and a Grand Prix for sports cars on Oct 11 followed by a champions race for top SCCA divisions. In Gardena Ascot Park, a benefit auto race for Arthritis Foundation is set for Sunday with all four CIA divisions racing and proceeds to KTLA Telethon. Joe Weatherly will be honored by Athletes International Raceway with a special tribute.

Petty Breaks 170 MPH Barrier at Daytona
Richard Petty of Randleman North Carolina became the first stock car driver to exceed 170 mph at Daytona International Speedway. He posted 174.689 mph in the morning and nearly hit 175 mph in the afternoon while piloting a 1964 Plymouth on the 2.5 mile oval. Speedway officials said the afternoon clocking was possibly the fastest stock car time ever recorded. The run comes as drivers seek the pole for Saturday's 50 mile NASCAR event and a chance to beat the 64.005 mph speed record set last July.
