California prison sentencing law to raise releases in first year
California’s new sentencing law will release 1,000 to 1,500 inmates in the first year, with total releases in the year starting July 1 seen at 8,000 to 8,500. The Corrections Department notes historical norms of 6,000 to 8,000 yearly releases, and cites a 1975 backlog under a prior tough policy. The law, effective July, shifts to fixed terms, with current prisoners’ terms recalculated and early releases possible unless deemed dangerous. Governor Brown may propose amendments to extend terms for some inmates.
