Kirkwood Meadows ski resort near Lake Tahoe plans a 300000 expansion for the 1977 season. The upgrade adds base lodge space, a 2500 square foot sun deck, two new chairlifts, and 92 acres of new terrain boosting uphill capacity to 5000 skiers per hour.
Snow conditions in California show significant accumulation with heavy to very heavy snow and hard packed areas. Officials warn of risky travel and variable snow depth across regions with mentions of inches of snow and potential holiday travel impact.
Ballyhoo, a 21.6 meter sloop skippered by Jack Rooklyn of Sydney, won the Sydney to Hobart race finishing 17 hours off the record. Winds up to 70 knots buffeted the fleet as Ballyhoo claimed a successful year with success in major events, aided by seven US crew members. Boating magazine lists 383 vessels in its annual directory.
Freeman McNeil of Banning High captured the L A City 4-A Division football player of the year honor with 162 points, 27 touchdowns, and 343 rushing yards, while Banning finished 12-1. The all L A City teams list McNeil among the stars and note Loyola’s season-opening loss.
California Department of Fish and Game finished its final 1976 aerial survey showing waterfowl near five million ducks and 491000 geese statewide mid December both lower than a year earlier. Pintails dominate the duck tally while the Sacramento Delta and San Joaquin grasslands host the heaviest concentrations. The general season runs to January 23 with some species ending sooner. A feature on Canada geese notes a Chino prison influence on geese dispersal and hunting along nearby flyways. Swordfish catches are unusually low this season with 315 fish caught by 189 boats. air spotting bans and fewer sightings contributed. New 1977 fishing licenses go on sale January 1.
