The United States and Japan announced a mid 1971 redeployment plan cutting bases in Japan and Okinawa, shifting some aircraft to South Korea. About 10,000 Japanese and 2,800 American base workers will lose jobs as bases become shared with Japan’s defenses.
National story reports Republicans and southern Democrats blocking a two thirds override of Nixon's veto on a 38.5 billion manpower bill aimed at creating thousands of government jobs for the unemployed. The 49 to 5 vote fell short by eight, with 39 Democrats and 9 Republicans backing the override. The bill had earlier passed 68 to 6 in the Senate.
The Supreme Court rejected Bobby Baker’s plea for reversal of his 1967 conviction on charges of theft, income tax evasion, and conspiracy. He faces 1 to 3 years in federal prison, with about 30 days before starting. Baker, once Lyndon Johnson's ally, planned a major oceanfront project in Maryland after the sentence.

A Cleveland judge ordered Annette Gilly to be extradited to Pennsylvania. The 29 year old is among five indicted in the Yablonski killings of Joseph Yablonski his wife and daughter at their Clarksville home on New Year Eve. A one day stay was granted pending appeal.
