Hotel Fire Kills 28 On Tucson Upper Floors
A fire swept the upper eight floors of the Pioneer International Hotel in Tucson, killing 28. More than 30 injured, 27 hospitalized, and about 750 evacuated. Fire officials faulted sprinkler and alarm systems for hindering escapes. Six Hermosillo youths among the dead were identified. cause under investigation.

Snow Level to Drop to 2500 Feet in Latest Storm
A second arctic storm swept the Southland as flood cleanups continued. Up to two more inches of rain are forecast through Tuesday with snow levels dropping to about 2,500 feet by Tuesday afternoon. Long Beach saw 2.51 inches of rain in the first storm. the season total rose to 10.5 inches. Police used a motor boat at Willow Street underpass to check stranded vehicles as cars navigated flooded streets and rafts appeared on other roads.

Police Slay 2 Suspects in Harbor City Bell
Two crime suspects were shot and killed and two women wounded by police in Harbor City and Bell in separate incidents. Harbor City officer Frank Riska fired five times after a car stop for drunken driving. Timothy Peyer 19 and Kathy Hernandez 20 were wounded, with Peyer later found to have a stolen .33 caliber revolver. In Bell, Officer James Ricker fatally shot William Hayman after a man allegedly threw a knife. Hayman died from abdominal wounds at Southeast Doctors Hospital. Police recovered a sawed-off shotgun, a briefcase with cash, and over 2,000 pills from the car. Hernandez was hospitalized and jailed on suspicion of assault and attempted murder.

Santa almost jailed as Long Beach cops book unsafe lane change
Joseph Vermetti of 2219 Bln Ave was stopped on the Long Beach Freeway near Willow Street at 3 am after an apparent unsafe lane change. Lacking a driver license or ID in his Santa suit, he was nearly booked, but Lt. Fred De Blanc intervened. A license was produced, and Vermetti received a citation for unsafe lane change.
