Spy ring case reaches German court over leaks

The ministry reported that the spy ring's activities emerged after the June 1978 arrests of Renate Lutze and her husband Lothar Lutze and Juergen Wiegel on spy charges. Lutze, personal secretary to Herbert Laabs, headed the Defense Ministry's Social Affairs Department, with her husband in the Armaments Department and Wiegel with the Naval Command Staff. They are slated for trial next month in Duesseldorf. Lutze had security clearance and access to a security safe. Laabs sat on a high level panel advising Defense Minister Georg Leber, and Lutze may have viewed secret documents not directly tied to her office. Laabs reportedly grew suspicious of Lutze’s lavish lifestyle, prompting security checks that found nothing at first.
