Tuna Boat Seized by Ecuador Off Pacific Coast
The Day Island tuna clipper, operating from Puerto Rico with Tacoma, was seized 19 miles off Ecuador and ordered toward Manta port. Ecuador claims 200 mile territorial waters while the U.S. maintains a three mile limit plus 12 mile fishing zone. State Department urged release and warned punitive action would hurt relations. Rep. Pelly called the seizure provocative and said U.S. efforts to secure Day Island’s release are ongoing.
