McCarthy Won't Commit To Supporting Johnson In 1968

Senator Eugene J. McCarthy refused to pledge support for President Johnson at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. He said he would oppose the Republican nominee or back a third party, depending on the nominee, and criticized Johnson’s handling of Congress and the Vietnam war. He singled out tax hike attempts and warned against rushed decisions, while noting Massachusetts Wisconsin and California primaries as pivotal. Rep. Richard Mahy later stated he would support Johnson.
