Demo governors seek tax cut and job program plan

Democratic governors pressed a two billion dollar tax cut paired with about one billion in new programs to revive the economy and create jobs. Rhode Island Governor Noel, chairing the group, said the move signals a larger role in national politics, while Maryland Governor Mandel argued it would boost revenues and employment without long term deficits. Texas Governor Briscoe criticized the plan as fiscally reckless, Florida Governor Askew defended it, and Alabama Governor Wallace dismissed a probing forum. The proposal calls for a permanent tax cut, an emergency job program, two billion in anti recession grants, and an accelerated public works push to maintain state and local employment.
