Reagan targets Berkeley campus rules in California race

In a speech amid a national wave of cold and storms, Ronald Reagan defended campus regulations and voiced support for student voice while signaling a purge of political interference at the University of California. He pledged to appoint John A. McCone to lead a probe into Berkeley disruptions and said he will push for a hands-off approach from the governor on university matters. Meanwhile a major winter storm disrupted the Northeast and Midwest, with snow totals up to two feet in parts of Ohio and Vermont, and several deaths attributed to the weather. Reagan pressed for policy consistency, maintaining he would not let politics influence university governance.
