A coalition led by the New York Civil Liberties Union and American Jewish Congress filed federal and state suits arguing federal funds should not aid religious schools. They seek injunctions and contend the practice violates the First Amendment by funding church teaching through taxation. The suit claims at least 150 million dollars nationwide, with eight to seven million in New York City.
Life Magazine photographer Lynwood Pelham testified Powell twice rammed a charter boat near Bimini and later menaced Pelham from his house with a shotgun saying this is private property I’ll kill you. Powell did not comment as calls went unanswered.
