Alaska official apologizes for racial remark by Lt. Gov
Lt. Gov. Lowell Thomas Jr apologized to Alaskans for saying that intermarriage between blacks and whites goes against nature. He said the remark reflected a childhood prejudice and that he does not favor segregation though he opposes mixed marriage. He defended his record and stressed efforts to overcome old biases while noting his past actions supporting minority rights. Alaska’s black community had protested his comments about U.S. South Africa relations. The governor commented that bias exists in everyone but does not hinder public service.
