Massive wildfires blacken more than 50 000 acres in San Diego and Riverside counties forcing 400 residents from their homes. Crews from city, state, and federal camps battle 100 degree heat to contain three major blazes with dozens of injuries and multiple evacuations. The Pendleton start fires threaten Camp Pendleton and Cleveland National Forest as containment drags into days.

The defense plan will base 10 new ships at Long Beach including the amphibious transport dock Juneau and tank landing ships St. Louis Frederick Manitowoc with four to six destroyer escorts. Long Beach also hosts nuclear frigates Long Bainbridge and Truxtun and the carrier refit of Ticonderoga.
