A large force of nearly 100 B 52 bombers dropped about 3000 tons on northern South Vietnam as defense officials warn of a potential enemy offensive. The attack targeted suspected positions while North Vietnamese mortars continued hitting seven Allied bases.
Reported shelling by North Vietnam since Sunday targeted a South Vietnamese artillery battalion southeast of Fire Mission O'Reilly base. Casualties were light as most Vietnamese troops had withdrawn, with officials warning a major offensive could unfold near Quang Tri near the DMZ.
The Soviet Union sent its seventh unmanned Venus mission on Monday aiming to outpace the United States in deep space. Soviet planners claim three landings on Venus, while Americans have not yet achieved such landings. Venus 7 is expected to reach the planet after about four months and a 217 million mile journey.
Communist China signed a dispatch in Peking promising military aid to Norodom Sihanouk who leads the government in exile in Cambodia. The announcement targets U.S. and its Indochina allies and offers no specifics on the type or timing of assistance.
In Beirut, parliament elected Finance Minister Suleiman Franjieh president amid a bitter dispute that sparked fistfights between rival factions and disrupted galleries. Police restored order as gunfire was heard in streets celebrated by Franjieh supporters.
Agnew rebuts claims Nixon ever asked him to curb his controversial speeches. The Satifilana possession trial of former stripper Candy Barr, who served time and swore off crime, was dismissed in Brownwood Texas for lack of evidence. Judge Joe Dibrell ruled the Mars file showed searches issued improperly. Barr, 35, real name Juanita Dale Slusher Phillips, was arrested in Dallas in 1957 on a similar charge and had a 40 year sentence reduced by pardon from Gov. Connally.
