Overflowing drain damages Nixon s impounded papers
A clogged air conditioner drain overflowed last weekend and damaged about 380 boxes of former president Nixon s papers impounded by court order for safekeeping. The incident prompted Nixon lawyers to seek a written delineation of safeguards, as about 80 percent of the 42 million documents left behind by Nixon were moved to Suitland Maryland last May. The contents, stored in 8000 boxes in the Executive Office Building, were deemed replaceable and not part of Nixon s tapes, with the Supreme Court to decide custody and constitutionality of Congress s seizure.
