Hughes tied Glomar Explorer deal to 1972 Nixon gift
CIA linked secret contract awarded to Hughes five weeks after his emergency $100,000 donation to Nixon for the 1972 re election campaign. The Glomar Explorer mission, built by Summa Corp and Global Marine, aimed to raise a Soviet submarine sunk in 1968. Clark County sources note no proven connection, but timing and secrecy sparked tax probe in Los Angeles County with a $7.5 million back bill in 1973.
