Symington calls Pentagon cuts key to fighting inflation
Sen. Stuart Symington argues that curbing inflation requires immediate federal spending cuts and proposes starting with reductions at the Pentagon. He notes military spending has risen about 300 percent in 20 years and sees little chance of major postwar cuts, urging a leaner defense to protect the economy. He backs a large staff to help lawmakers evaluate weapons and strategies. He also doubts Vietnam war end in sight and predicts limited troop withdrawals for the time being.
