Nixon to Welcome 1st Marines Home at Camp Pendleton

President Nixon will fly to Camp Pendleton on April 30 to greet the 1st Marine Division returning from Vietnam and spend five or six days at the Western White House in San Clemente. Press secretary Ziegler notes the trip as coincidental to antiwar demonstrations in Washington. The unit arrived in April 1966 and returns during the current withdrawal phase, with 150,000 troops pulled out in the past year. US troop strength is slated at 284,000 on May 1, with a further 100,000 to be withdrawn by December 1.
