Trench collapse kills geologist in Signal Hill

Norman Wiener a 43 year old Huntington Beach resident, employed by Associated Soils Engineering, was buried in an unshored trench near Ohio Avenue and Panorama Drive Signal Hill. Firemen and a tractor operator removed his body after a more than hour long rescue attempt. Wiener was dead on arrival at Community Hospital. Police noted he entered the trench alone and it is unclear who dug the hole or why.

Army to close or cut back 29 bases nationwide

The Army announced plans to close or reduce 29 forts and bases to save at least 42 million dollars annually. Ft MacArthur in San Pedro faces phased shutdown by late 1977, with possible personnel transfers to Las Alamitos Naval Air Station. Senate panel OKs bill to break up oil giants

The Senate antitrust subcommittee approved a plan to force the 18 largest oil firms to split into four segments within five years. The measure would let refiners keep outlets before May 1, 1476 and create a divestiture court to handle cases. FTC oversight could shape divestiture plans and allow limited asset retention.

Wholesale prices rise slightly in March amid inflation easing
