An American general Brig. Gen. William Bond of the 199th Brigade was killed near Saigon as Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces pressed a major offensive. More than 170 Allied troops died, with 50 plus enemy fatalities. Cambodian attack marks new incursions after Norodom Sihanouk's ouster.
By noon industry sources counted 170 strikes across 35 cities leaving 72 companies shut down. Trucking Employers Inc. called it a massive strike situation, contrasting earlier scattered actions in 1967.
At a Democratic State Committee meeting in Liberty New York Arthur Goldberg created a furor by first rejecting then accepting the party designation for governor while arguing to run via a primary. Government negotiators proposed a six percent raise for all federal workers and an additional six percent for mail carriers who back Post Office reform. AFL CIO President George Meany will decide whether to accept or reject the package, pending congressional approval.
