California seeks major increase in public control of consumer boards
In Sacramento, the Brown administration proposed sweeping reforms to California consumer protection, giving public members control of many boards and commissions. The plan aims to make regulators more responsive to the public, with one third public membership on health licensing boards and a Residents Utility Consumer Action Group to voice consumer interests before the Public Utilities Commission. The package also includes promoting direct marketing of farm products, stopping unfair consumer tricks, and funding a consumer voice via a voluntary two dollar-per-year bill.
