The Hopville blaze destroyed Pincus hops kilns and a storehouse with cured hops. Pincus had completed a 40 acre yard near the home and the entire crop was lost in the ad store house. Fire, fueled by gas, spread through the structure threatening adjacent holdings. crews prevented further damage at the roof of another building.
First faculty meeting set in Room 20 at 3:00 p m Saturday to outline year work. Regular classes begin 8:00 a m next Monday with chapel Tuesday morning. Students from Portland and Salem advised to take transfers. special train from Dallas arrives by 7:20 to 8:00. Renovated building features a new gym floor and improved interior. Dean Told reports enrollment and staff changes. others attended events in Salem and Bay Ocean.
After about a dozen years Williams operated a ranch two miles north of town and realized a handsome profit. He plans to take life easier and has not decided on future plans. He expects to stay in the area, possibly Independence or Salem.
A Standard Oil transport rolled onto its side on a grade near George Dickinson's Thursday afternoon. Driver Claude Brown escaped injury as the truck was righted and brought to company headquarters later that evening.
Miss Florence Gebo former Independence resident has closed an engagement with the Royal English Opera, a high class touring company. Their repertoire includes Mika do Pinafore Trial by Jury Chimes of Normandy Pirates of Penzance Bohemian Girl. Gebo has studied under Barney Furey in Portland and has contracted for a six months engagement ending in New York City.
An official Navy list received by Oregon Adjutant General White covers 80 Oregon men who died serving in World War I from April 6, 1917, to November 11, 1918. Forty eight were Oregon natives and 32 from other states enlisted from Oregon. six of the deceased were Cyclops crew, with 47 dying of pneumonia and 12 from injuries. Two officers and 78 enlisted men. The compiled names include residents of Portland, Salem, Astoria, and other communities across Oregon.
A young woman was slightly injured after being struck by a car on the highway leading north from the business district. Poor lighting and no sidewalk force pedestrians onto the road. motorists blind by oncoming headlights have near misses. Residents urge sidewalk construction and may bring the issue to the city council next session.
Roseburg high school girls debut white middy blouses and blue skirts as uniform dress replacing previous fashions. Silk stockings and high heels are banned. a student committee enforces conformity with strict punishments for noncompliance.
Independence will gain a new merchantile establishment as a branch of Farmers' Cash Store of Salem. C. Burton Durdall leased a hotel block storefront and said the store would be ready in about a week. The same firm also operates a Silverton store.
The Oregon State Highway Commission will halt further highway spending in Polk County until the west side Pacific highway location is protected from court disturbance. Mandamus actions to include Independence and Dallas are before the Oregon Supreme Court. Salen Dallas road work remains partially finished between Brunk's corner and Dallas as county court denied routing Pacific highway directly south of Monmouth.
B F Swope and Joe McCloud purchase a seven acre tract from Mrs Bertha Finseth in Independence on Seventh Street for loganberry cultivation. The land will be plowed this fall and planted next spring. Swope also buys two E Seventh Street lots from J G McIntosh, to house his chicken operation.
The Parker district will lose farmers Arthur E. Horton and W. T. House as Horton may move to Independence or elsewhere while House plans to relocate his family to Seattle and spend winter with a son in British Columbia. A public sale at the Horton ranch is set for Friday next week featuring horses cattle hogs sheep farming implements and household foods.
Sparks from the flue set the Walker Bros hop house roof alight on Wednesday. A rapid bucket brigade prevented major damage as the blaze gained headway before crews halted it. Damages were nominal and covered by insurance. the hops-filled building avoided a heavy loss.
Company K presents a boxing and wrestling smoker at the opera house tonight at 8:30. Six boxing matches and two wrestling bouts feature Dubs Mulkey versus Sailor Blossoms in the main eight round event, with Patnoe, McKinzie, Fox, Fox, Ballard, Buchannon, Cave, Brown, Birkholtz and Welcome also listed. Proceeds benefit Company K athletic fund, under supervision of Bud Anderson. all events guaranteed and clean.
Governor Cox spoke in the Salem armory on the league of nations and disarmament though throat trouble and rain kept many from hearing. J L Linn Joe McCloud and William Dawes joined the crowd as Cox delivered the address to supporters.
Will Manning of Monmouth purchased a small acreage tract in Olymphia Washington and plans to start a chicken business. He traveled with his family to the Washington town this week after moving from Independence to Monmouth a year ago.
The graded school in Independence will open September 27, delaying one week at the advise of Monmouth Normal School President Ackerman. High school work starts the same day, with new principal Mr. Byers preparing the year. Pupils express disappointment over delaying the gymnasium project, shared by school supporters.
In Cherbourg France preparations for moving American soldiers home continue. Carpenters build coffins seamstresses craft funeral ornaments. Warehouses become mortuary chapels and a catafalque glows as the Antigon arrives with lumber for coffins.
The Dallas Observer reports Joseph Goetz’s model apple orchard eight miles north of Dallas is entering bearing. An appraiser predicts an average of 800 bushels per acre on 12 acres, noting the crop’s superior quality with no disease. Goetz sprayed five times and credits careful care for resilience against cold and frost.
Marshfield Coos county launches a county wide program to exchange a thoroughbred bull for every farmer who participates. Banks behind the plan include Bank of Southwestern Oregon Marshfield First National Bank of Bandon and Farmers Merchants Bank of Coquille. The aim is to promote thoroughbred stock, eliminate scrub bulls and costly calves, with no cost to ranchers.
J. K. Ridgeway sustained a severe back injury today while working for S. A. Foster Lumber Co. He will be transported to Portland for hospital care this afternoon and admission tonight.
The bimonthly reports of the Farmers State Bank and the Independence National Bank are published in the enterprise today.
