Fennell with a twenty acre hop yard in Missouri bottom earns the honor of shipping the first car load of hops from Independence. The consignment was aligned to W. M. Brown of Salem and contained 81 bales. Observers who saw the hops before they were slipped described them as A No. 1.

The Monmouth Canning and Evap Co. operates at full blast processing pears and prunes with about 50 employees and daily $50 to farmers. The drying dept. runs 1000 boxes daily. canning handles 150 dozen quart cans plus cherries and berries. Next season aims to handle vegetables. manager B C Powell says strong demand supports continued orders and compares with idle plant in Independence. Messrs Stirg and Darst relocate to Independence to pursue similar business.

Public School Opens September 27 1809 in Independence
The Independence public schools will open for the nine month term on September 27 with Prof J G McIntosh as new principal replacing Prof Kirk. His wife will assist and teach the high school. Grades list new and returning teachers and required textbooks for each grade.

City Marshal Struck During Sunday Crowding
Large Sunday crowd on C street crowded Cox Cigar Store area leaving no passable space. Simms of Belknap Springs struck City Marshal Feagle in the face when asked to step back. Simms posted a $20 fine after arrest on city and state charges. others secured his release on bond.

Dallas man undergoes jaw removal operation
D B Richardson of Dallas was operated on at Good Samaritan hospital for cancer of the jaw. Surgeons removed the entire left lower jaw in a procedure called excision of the jaw. The 78 year old stood the operation well and has a good chance of recovery though he will need liquid nourishment for life. The operation followed consultations with prominent surgeons arranged by Dr T V B Embree.
