Joe Egleston, new to Monmouth, must pay five dollars for overloading a truck without a license after delaying permit. Willard Laurence’s criminal case was dropped after he agreed to pay for damage to a car owned by his daughter Margaret Yeater in an August 28 accident. Laurent was accused of wrong-side driving.

Floral firm acquires Barnett greenhouse for plant expansion
Independence Floral buys the Barnett property greenhouse relocating it to Seventh and LD streets. The company just finished a 50x100 structure needing three tons of Belgian glass for the roof. Owners F E Butt return from Portland while Mrs Well sher oversees the site. The Butt family says business is ahead of expectations and a complete modern plant will be ready.

Stonehocker to Move From Airlie to Independence
W H Stonehocker plans to relocate with his family from Airlie to a six acre Phillips ranch north of Independence about September 10. He will lease the Worner ranch near Airlie and hold a public sale there on September 5, with J J Edwards selling farming equipment at the same event. Stonehocker, his wife and seven children seek better school privileges. two will enter grade school and two high school. He is recovering from a typhoid fever illness and was in Independence for sale arrangements.

Salem Man Killed at Camp One by Falling Tree
Alfred Moullet age old years was killed instantly Tuesday morning at 8 30 by a falling tree at camp one of the Cobb and Mitchell company. The body was taken to Staton for funeral services after burial preparation by A L Keeney. He leaves a widow and three children of 1163 South Liberty Salem.

Grace Methodist Church Cleared of Debt in Independence
The Grace Methodist Episcopal Church of Independence has paid off a long standing debt tied to its church edifice. Pastor Rev F Clemo will preach farewell next Sunday and the mortgage may be burned during ceremonies if received in time. The fourth quarterly conference Aug 24 reported good church finances, with ministerial support nearly paid and a positive outlook for future work. The annual conference opens at Salem next week with appointment news to follow.

Joe Birkholz Injured At Gravel Plant
Joe Birkholz escaped serious harm at the Independence Sand and Gravel plant after a near-fatal fall while adjusting a cable on a cross haul hoist. He sustained multiple bruises and a leg burn but no broken bones, and is resting at home with crutches, planning a quick return to work.

Mrs. Henderson Simpson a longtime Airlie resident died at her son Fain Simpson’s home near Eugene last Saturday at age 1? years. Burial Tuesday at the English cemetery near Airlie with Rev. D Y Polling officiating. She was born in Arkansas and came to Oregon in 1856. survived by three sons Fain Phy and David, one sister Mrs Tom Williams, two half brothers James Sebring and Mark Sebring, and a daughter Mrs Telia Hanna who died years ago. Property now owned by Mrs. Dorsey Turner. Mr Simpson predeceased her.

A Sunday reunion at Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Thurston’s home near Independence drew six of seven children and their families. Attendees included J. J. Thurston of Fenelon Falls Canada Herbert Thurston Suver P B Thurston Buena Vista Miz Florence Thurston Stewart Lindsay Canada and L L Conger Eagle Point Oregon. Arnold J. Thurston of Alberta Canada was absent. Florence Stewart known locally as a trained nurse visited before returning to Lindsay. J J Thurston and family left for Canada where he was elected to provincial parliament in 1921 for a five year Progressive term.

Lightning strikes P. O. Black home near Independence
The P. O. Black residence north of Independence was hit by lightning Wednesday morning. The interior was wrecked with heavy smoke and rugs aflame in a second floor sleeping room. Stella Black, home alone on the back porch, assisted by a rug fire extinguisher, escaped through smoke to the second story to fight flames. The bolt entered the chimney, tore the roof, and damaged the kitchen and milk house, with fire spreading through the floor and wall.

Stage Regulations Planned by City Council in Special Meeting
At a special city council meeting on Wednesday the proposed stage regulations were discussed. A $25 annual license fee per car was proposed for Independence service. The Beaver hotel would be the terminal with passenger handling restricted there. For hire cars may meet trains but cannot carry passengers out of the city in competition with stage lines. Parker of the Salem Monmouth line attended. The council may permit the Monmouth Independence carrier to transport passengers to and from the Southern Pacific station. A resolution to pave Third Street from A to with concrete was introduced, with work planned for this fall.
