The Independence Enterprise launches a six week subscription drive offering a $450 piano from Eiler Piano House of Portland as grand prize. Open Oct 20 to Dec 2, 2011 with 1 to 1000 votes per blank and district prizes. nominations, reduced rates, and voting coupons drive participation.
Newton and Son purchase the Geo Heck butcher shop. After the plant update new machinery is installed. Mr Heck buys the El more Dieh farm near Monmouth, about 57 acres, and plans to occupy the Heck residence on railroad street, likely moving to the city.
200 acres of hop land for sale on Luckiamute Bottom five miles from Monmouth. Price 965.00 per acre if purchased immediately. Western Real Estate Co., Monmouth, Oregon.
A new bank is planned in Independence by J J Fenton of Chaybull Wyoming and local businessmen. Construction will begin soon on a 104 foot frontage two story concrete and pressed brick building costing about 16000 dollars. Fenton possibly named president with his Wyoming partner as cashier. Sperling will build and become a key stockholder.
The Sacred Concert scheduled for the 19th is moved to the 26th. The program includes praises, Ave Maria, violin solos, a Be Sure You're Right lecture by Father J A Conaty, and choral works by Father Raymond and others with Mrs Fennell violin and the Choir King of the Vikings. Doors open 7 30 p m, curtain at 8 p m. Tickets available at two drug stores.
A Spaulding Logging Company horse hitched to a delivery wagon broke loose in the lumber yard near Monmouth and Railroad streets. The animal dashed through Monmouth and Independence Monmouth railways, wrecking the wagon and colliding with a telephone pole before being recaptured near the Salem road bridge. No serious injuries were reported.
Ward Evans, who arrived to oversee Oregon Power Company interests in Independence, died suddenly Tuesday morning at his Dallas home. He had been ill only a few days and, though he traveled to the depot recently, his condition worsened. Stomach trouble was the reported immediate cause.
R. L. Gaines has purchased the pool room and cigar business from Fluke and Smith, taking over operations and clientele as the new owner.

Milk cows, feed horses and hogs, collect eggs, tend calves, catch and stable a colt, chop wood, split kindling, stir cream, pump water in the creamery, then study lessons before bed. The farmer then attends the farmers club to discuss keeping sons on the farm.
Polk County farmers swept the sheep and goats division at the Washington State Fair winning 68 of 87 prizes. They captured 21 firsts, 22 seconds, 15 thirds and 56 champions. Riddell & Sons earned 36 prizes, John Stump 23, and Mr. Marks four. Both Stump and Riddell own farms within five miles of the city.
