A Monday mass meeting set the field for city offices with Walker favored as presiding officer and Swope chosen as secretary. Nominees include M Walker Irvine and Mrs F, with bids for mayor and recorder receiving broad but split support.
Ten men from Independence were initiated into the Knights of Korrasan at Falls City on a Saturday night. The ceremony included Elmer Addison, William Woods, Claude Brown, Armine Cooper, Carl Anderson, Guy G. Walker, A. G. Williams, Rollo Taylor, Ott Martin, and Carl Shoemaker, with three wives present. A large delegation from Portland attended earlier in Dallas before proceeding to Falls City for an all night session, featuring dancing and other attractions.
Eldon J Price, an Independence youth, wed Miss Iane Knapp, a Monmouth high school girl, at Hotel Beaver with Justice Robert Baker officiating. The couple leaves for a honeymoon to Portland and Seattle aboard the afternoon train. Witnesses were Frank L Price and Fred Yates. The bride is granddaughter of the Holdbrooks of Monmouth. The groom has worked in Independence and may join his father in the Price ranch.
Officials report heavy traffic on the Pacific highway between Portland and Salem, based on a census showing peak hours from 8 to 6 with 1802 vehicles counted, including 83 trucks and 1142 automobiles. The census estimates about 908 vehicles per hour at peak and notes variation through the day.
Notices announce the forthcoming marriage of Miss Burton and Mr. Henkle. The ceremony will be held at noon at Burton Mouth Street. both residents are described as socially active and well liked, with a romance spanning several years.
City High School students held a Wednesday assembly to appoint a social committee to plan Friday programs, with timing to be decided. The Senior class elected officers Glen Burright president Lulu Grigsby treasurer and Faye Walker secretary.
The divorce suit of Mrs Frances E Hill against Verd Hill began in the Albany circuit court. The couple married in 1914 and she seeks absolute divorce custody of a three year old daughter $20000 cash and one third of Mr Hills real estate. Cruelty charges figure on both sides as testimony continues with many witnesses expected next week.
At Dallas last week Uncle Billy Wright won two prizes totaling 22 dollars for a farm booth display of London grass corn and vegetables. He entered late yet his exhibit earned second prize 15 dollars and 7 dollars on another display. Wright, owner of six acres of tomatoes, notes wet weather damaged harvest but remains optimistic about fall potato planting for early next year.
E. H. Piasecki of Dallas, Polk county district attorney and Democratic candidate for reelection, spoke to the Retail Merchants' association at the Hotel Beaver in Independence Tuesday. He reviewed his work as district attorney, told stories, and noted the salary of 37 1/2 dollars per month paid by the state, saying he would not advocate an increase.
An extremely poor road segment south of Polk County cannot be traversed by car. Graded last summer but lacking gravel, it has turned into a mire over about a half mile. Mr. Fry of Hoskins traveled by Corvallis to reach repairs and will return by train.
Arrangements are set for an opera house gathering next Monday evening where versed speakers will explain proposed November amendments. Emphasis will be on the marketing bill and the four percent interest amendment. No politics. women invited. Meeting opens at 8 o’clock.
The vessel arrived last Monday on its first river run to this point and proceeded to Albany. Returning Tuesday it carried freight from the L. Damon dock. The boat serves river work on a two day round trip between Portland and Albany with upriver trips Monday Wednesday Friday and downstream trips Tuesday Thursday Saturday. J. 8. Bohannon and Joel Hubbard run the dock. Mr. Damon traveled to Salem on Tuesday and passenger traffic was sizable.
Federal war department data showed 710 Oregon men listed as slackers. Portland accounted for 291, with Benton Lincoln and Wheeler counties exempt from the count. counties statewide listed numerous names to be published after verification.
Re C Clement Portland post office inspector visits Camp 1 of Siletz Lumber to arrange opening a postoffice named Valsetz a contraction of Valley and Siletz railroad serves district. A temporary postmaster will be appointed without civil service due to urgent need. Clement checked Postmaster Wood’s affairs and found them in excellent shape.
Lief FP Finseth of Dallas was elected grand vice chancellor of the domain of Oregon of the Knights of Pythias at the Marshfield convention. Mrs Hays has returned from the Marshfield convention and Dr L E Barick and Frank E Dickson are expected back tonight by boat via Portland.
Ernst Zielesch to hold a public sale at his Parker farm next Friday including two fine Shetland ponies heavy work horses cows pigs sheep and farming implements. Zielesch a successful Parker farmer has leased land to ease life A L Stevens will be auctioneer and C W Irvine clerk.
The B Y P U executive committee met at Rev Proppe's home and planned a busy season. Seated to supper at 6:38 were young people with B Y P U emblems on place cards. Ruth Dickinson and the social committee announce a hard time social next Thursday night inviting all over 15 to join in old clothes in the church basement.
Oregon Normal notes include talks by Mr E H Whitney and others at Roseburg Kelso Grant Valley and Baker institutes. Building work starts next Monday on the heating plant addition. Senior and faculty social events featured a gym party, opera visit, and a Jack London film showing. Oak Point Rural Center won $80 in Polk county fair prizes for poultry booth canning and blue ribbons.
Interest grows for the Polk corn show to be held in Independence with a committee meeting soon to set dates and arrange details. A premium list will offer cash prizes for top corn varieties grown locally, as Oregon expands its corn production and the state show in Portland aims for up to 1000 dollars in awards with Governor Olcott endorsing the effort.
Hertry Turnbull has run a Buena Vista store since August. He will move his stock to Independence on the coming month and occupy the former Walters Tire space on C street temporarily. He planned to stay at Buena Vista but a lease on a nearby building forced a move. He expects his brother from Hope North Dakota to join soon and they will choose a permanent location after arrival.
Corvallis reports Farm Bureau officers from across Oregon will meet in Portland on October 22 and 23 to consider the constitution and by laws drafted for a state federation. A committee led by Geo A Mansfield met at the state fair in Salem to prepare a tentative charter to federate county bureaus, coordinate policy, pursue favorable legislation, and improve agriculture, home economics, and rural life.
Levi McKee, a young son of W Hi McKee living near Perrydale, was accidentally shot in the foot with a .22 rifle. The gun was in the hands of his younger brother Nolan when the accident occurred. The wound is not considered serious.
After a period of idleness the sawmill of C. Cleveland at Pedes has resumed operations and expects to run throughout the winter.
