Genial Woodmen of the World leader in Independence appeals to members and neighbors about fraternal life insurance. He cites 105000 members, urges permanence, prevents lapsation, and promotes duties of brotherhood. A program featuring Lee Willard’s The Man From Missouri is noted for October 26.
Claude Johnson and Clara Earhart won first prize for best costumes, Frank Kirkland and Maurice Butler took second in rural costumes, Dorris Herren was first for best single skater. About fifty costumed skaters performed as a large crowd filled the auditorium for a very pleasant event.
A Baltimore newspaper notices Conkey Walker and Lehman offering a fresh supply of flannel goods. The firm claims to have earned a reputation for providing the best values in town.
In Monmouth on Wednesday October 13 in the Hedges home Mrs Sarah Therp of Independence wed Mr John Shelton of Monmouth. The Rev Wood of Monmouth officiated at noon. Both are elderly pioneers who crossed the plains in the early fifties and will reside in Monmouth after a visit to Goldendale Washington.
Independence Circle No 69 Women of Woodcraft calls for full attendance Friday October 22. Miss Eva Montgomery of Salem will speak for the good of the order. Clerk Miss Kathryn Jones issues the notice.

The Apple Show program, held at the Alco Club auditorium and gym, outlines sessions from October 27 to 29 with judges, music, and talks on pruning, peach growing, orchard management, publicity, sprays, and apple supply and demand. A. J. Moore of Highland died at home after several months of illness. He leaves a wife and stepson. The funeral was held yesterday. Efforts to obtain a fuller death account proved difficult. the office hopes a more detailed report may appear next week.

Hop growers report prices around twenty five cents per pound for Oregon hops with last year averaging seven cents. 1908 may begin a run of high prices as world light crops push values upward, with Oregon harvest at about 70,000 bales and California around 60,000, while further years may bring higher production and a price drop later.
