The Polk County fair week featured a major turnout with schools presenting entries and speakers. Winners included Lorene J Greenwood and others, while exhibits showcased fruit, vegetables, grains, and livestock from local booths and farms under Grange and Farmers' Union supervision.

Marion McCoy sold his 26 acre Hawkington ranch and bought a residence with one acre on south Seventh wheel from Robert Roberts. He moved his family here this week. Independence Realty handled both transactions.
Polk county prunes show unusually large fruit with high percentages in the 80 40 and 90 8a grades. Oregon Growers Association grading at Salem reports many lots exceeding 80 percent in top grades and buyers remain eager, though smaller sizes may be offered later depending on volume.
A Buena Vista field exhibit by “Uncle Billy” Wright features 70 acres of river-bottom farmed intensively with fruits vegetables grains and related products. Death claims two Buena Vista residents Moore Getty 73 and Mrs Mabel Snyder with funeral details and survivor lists.
Miss Ruby Ann Lorence daughter of C. Lorence of Monmouth will open a singing studio at her home after years of voice culture studies in New York She studied with John Dennis Mehan and at the studio of Elizabet h Clark Sleight and is a graduate of the Institute of Musical Art New York and formerly majored in music at Orwron Agricultural college.
Miss Betty Stillwell of Independence has been elected secretary of the Madrigal club at Oregon Agricultural College. Flossie Blackburn of Corvallis is president, Charlotte Olson of North Powder vice-president, Vivian Feike of Portland barometer reporter, and Thelma Miller of Portland librarian. Intensive practice will begin. a business manager will be chosen later.
Mrs. W. N. Sharp Paul Sharp and Mrs. Madge Gaston and daughter of Portland spent Wednesday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Horton. They returned to Portland that evening except Mrs. Gaston and baby who will remain longer.
Floyd Heffley a salesman for Independence Garage recounts a near miss when a drum of datillate exploded after a match was lit to gauge fullness. The blast burned much of his hair and eyebrows and scorched his face, prompting his opposition to using such fuel sources.

Preliminary grading for a two and a half mile highway segment south from Ed Steele Place to the Benton county line began yesterday. Ben nett & Co of Portland hold the sublet, with Hilli brand contracted by the state highway commission, also handling the Rickreall north section. The route skirts Wheeler hill on a new alignment, avoiding the hill’s heavy grade. The legality of this contract and another project between Monmouth and Rickreall is disputed and awaiting Judge Kelley’s early ruling.
The American Legion will lead a November 11 Armistice Day celebration in Independence with events across Polk county. A. L. Keeney will direct, scheduling a Monmouth forenoon program, a high school gym afternoon program, a 5 o clock dinner and a dance, plus musical numbers and a Graves cannery band if arranged.
Independence city council approved a tentative budget for the next year at an adjourned meeting attended by six taxpayers. The levy stands at 20 mills, similar to last year, with some funds rising and others falling. Library funding increases to 400 from 240, while some intersection levies decrease. The new law requires a council aided by six freeholders to prepare the budget, publish it for two weeks, then submit it to a general meeting for approval with possible changes.
Gerald Hewett of Independence representing the fresh math class climbed a 60 foot steel flagpole at Oregon Agricultural College Corvallis to bring down the rock flag bearing the numeral 25. Hewett weighed 96 pounds and completed the ascent with no hesitation before requesting and receiving a piece of the flag as his reward.
Miss Gaynelle Baldwin daughter of Mr and Mrs M P Baldwin married Leonard Clark at the Baldwin home in Portland on October 4. The bride is an accomplished musician who studied violin in Germany. Mr Clark holds a notable position with Standard 671 company as coast representative. They will reside in San Francisco.
