Independence School begins term as enrollment nears record highs with high school crowding and full classes reported. Principal McIntosh and staff report smooth start as district enacts compulsory education rules and truancy safeguards.
James Laurence, a respected Independence rancher and father of ten, was shot during a charivari at Jensen Townsend’s home seven miles northwest of McMinnville. Townsend claims the shooting was accidental as Laurence grabbed the gun while Townsend greeted the revelers. Townsend is jailed. Laurence’s widow and children face hardship.
The Bee Hive store in Dallas promotes October fare free travel from any county point with a clothes purchase as they unveil over 5600 men and boys suits. The Enterprise notes strong ad results and cites J. L. Stockton of Salem as another heavy advertiser whose fire sale averaged over $1800 daily.
The Independence public library remains popular with many patrons visiting each afternoon from two to five o'clock. A librarian handles about twenty books daily and shelves receive a similar count. The magazine table is well used and many country visitors are among the borrowers. A heating stove was installed in the reading rooms this week to improve comfort.
Pioneer Willard P Bevens 63, longtime resident near Buena Vista, died Friday night after months of illness. Funeral held Sunday at M B church Buena Vista with Rev McCain and Rev Iauner officiating. Burial in Odd Fellows cemetery. service said to be the largest in the county. Born 1846 in Decatur county Missouri, he came to Oregon with parents in 1864 reaching Yamhill county.
Falls City report notes deer coming down from the mountains this week, with local parties planned to view the movement and related town events in the vicinity.
SAY LONG GOT HIS BEEF CATTLE RE. F. Black of Buena Vista filed a charge of larceny against C. Long, owner of Long's Market. In Buena Vista district the case hinges on three two year old cattle taken from Clyde Hill pasture around August 28. The trial was postponed to secure witnesses.
