Independence residents hear outlines for a new 100000 foot per ten hour sawmill with full shift operations. The project includes land funding, right of way from Ash Creek to the river, and a nine month operation deadline backed by the Commercial Club and local bankers.
A Polk County candidate outlines priorities for the Oregon State Legislature focusing on taxation reduction, prudent spending, and opposition to a highway measure and a Columbia River bridge. He pledges to work for residents, scrutinize appropriations, and support the candidate with the most votes for U S Senator at the general election.
R P Dickinson led a race at Salt Lee City last week after a 20 to 1 wager. He finished with 2000 dollars and the purse, sending the result to his father Friday evening. Dickinson has a promising horse that sets a proud record for the owner.
Frank Buffum convicted at Salem last week of larceny was sentenced by Judge Kelley to serve from one to five years in prison. His female partner in the crime was sentenced to from one to ten years.
The Grahamona, a new Willamette River steamer, made its first river trip from Independence with about 250 passengers. Owned by Oregon City Transfer Co and led by A B Graham, the vessel is 172 feet long, 30 feet wide, with two 150 hp engines, drawing 18 inches loaded, and capable of carrying 460 passengers.
Buena Vista schools have adopted a manual training course enabling work at home to complete daily records across branches. With proper encouragement the plan should benefit both parents and students by expanding at home activities and outcomes.

At a special meeting after evening services Calvary Presbyterian Church unanimously refused to accept Dr. Dinsmore’s resignation. Arrangements were made for a new formal system and work is expected to proceed with renewed activity. Dr and Mrs Dinsmore will remain in charge and regular services continue Sunday.
Last Friday the Juniors hosted Misa Evelyn Mc Laughlin at Misa Vale Hillibrand's home after a song program and refreshments. Independence High School football faced Willamette University, outplayed but held to one score. Newtor, Marvin, Richardson and Moran starred for Independence. Upcoming game with Corvallis High School, officer elections for all classes, and a student body constitutional session concluded with the constitution adopted and officers elected.
To voters the public is informed that H C Seymour, the Republican candidate for County School Superintendent, asserts he kept his first term promise by improving county schools. He asks voters to evaluate his record and pledges continued efforts if reelected.
Markey Hibbard forged the name of Chaz Fitchard and secured 100 from the Independence National Bank after presenting a counterfeit check. Bank cashier DeArmond alerted authorities, and Hibbard was arrested in Salem by Deputy Sheriff Esch while en route to Portland. He faces related charges in Sam on for obtaining money under false pretenses.
A handwritten or typed letter outlines Elmer E. Paddock's platform values and pledges. He backs funded country roads, opposes costly state backed road projects, seeks fewer schools, opposes new boards, pledges tax cuts, and promises to follow voters' wishes in key elections. He notes Polk County roots and 20 years in local business.
Nelson and Henkle will start work in a few days on a new late play house on Main Street. The building will house their moving picture business and be strictly modern, a credit to Independence.
Dr Malcomson a graduate of the American School of Osteopathy Kirksville Missouri with the Drs Howells Osteopathic physicians in Corvallis will donate two days weekly to Independence residents. She will examine and consult free during November to introduce Osteopathy and its benefits. She will be at Mrs J B Hildbrand’s residence on C street opposite the public school Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday forenoon treating women and children only Clyde Hill of Portland visited the city on Wednesday.
C P Gates, running for representative, will close his campaign in Independence by using the phrase Hell to describe the area. The remark follows a speech by Gill, a county prohibition committee field worker, who called Independence hell.
