The report lists pupil counts over 14 and under 1u, days taught 18, attendance 29878, absences 2453, late arrivals 258, and honor roll designations for Polk county schools. It includes names of many schools, centers on attendance and tardiness, and a detailed apportionment for district teachers and clerks with amounts paid to each.
Ex president of Venezuela Cesar Castro reportedly consults lawyers in Paris to pursue a damage suit against the French government for his expulsion from Martinique. He argues France has power to expel foreigners at its discretion and claims he was forced aboard a ship and sent to France without destination options. Tillamook May 4 A circuit court judge said a reliable citizen warned him his life would be taken if he sentenced a defendant found guilty at this term. The threat is believed to come from a bootlegger seeking to influence the case, prompting a sensation in court and local concern.
Panama reports the death of Dr. Samuel Amador aged 75, the first president of Panama after its 1903 separation from Colombia. Amador, a key figure in the revolution, died after a lingering illness. Also notes Dewey's Manila Bay victory anniversary marked by naval officers at a May banquet. In New York, May 2, a jury found the New York American publishers guilty of criminal libel in a Rockefeller article case.
