Jersey cattle sale marks county’s strongest herd showing
The Harry Weat herd sale in Scappoose Oregon drew Polk County buyers led by Mary Tt and John Stump with multiple head purchases. Eleven bidders joined, eight cattle went to Independence, and the West herd sold for a total of $16,850 with premiums topping $1,000. The event, praised as the greatest thoroughbred cattle sale in the west, featured Island bred stock and a bull calf from an imported Island bull worth $1,000.

Death of Mrs Watson Independence resident dies at 71
Mrs Rachel Watson, longtime Independence resident born May 21 1839 in Smithfield Illinois, died April 28 1910 at home at age 70 years 11 months 7 days. She moved to Oregon in 1881 and lived in Independence over 15 years. Funeral at Calvary Presbyterian 2 p.m. with Dr Dunsmore officiating. Burial in IOOF Cemetery.
