A man, M Kurre, cashier of a local bank, shot himself in his bathroom on Tuesday morning. His wife found him, efforts of Dr. Butler failed, and he died instantly. He left a will seeking cremation and a simple funeral under Knights of Pythias auspices. The body was cremated in Portland that evening. He was 3 years, 8 months, 26 days old and spent most of his life in Independence. Funeral in Baptist church officiated by Dr. Dunsmore.
The county drew the largest class for the national army and the exemption board mailed notices to 48 men. Of these, 11 join alternates, 28 are drafted for artillery to depart around July 65, and 4 will attend the San Francisco mechanical training school. Names listed include Charles Winters, Roy Martin, Peter Voth, Delbert Scott, Otto Knee pone, and many others from towns like Dallas Salem and Independence.
C A C Corvallis reports professor G R Hyslop of Oregon Agricultural College warns that stacking hay saves labor at baling and improves quality by reducing bleaching and shrinkage. He advises a pole or board foundation for moisture control a symmetric pitching from both sides and a high center to shed moisture while avoiding overly wide stacks.
L Powell in San Antonio Texas with his son Clares who suffers blood poisoning from a knee injury in a basketball game. Clares passed army physical but contracted illness and has been in an army hospital. A slight operation on the foot has improved him but travel home will take time. Mr and Mrs G R Crowfoot depart for Maupin to retrieve belongings and plan to settle nearby renting White property in North Monmouth then buy a local farm. Miss Beth Ostrom visits Corvallis for the weekend. Miss Laura Farrington returns home from Normal school life with aunt Mrs J L Van Loan at Columbia Falls Montana. Wes Shrunk and family of Salem visit Sunshine Farm. Lt B B Hamilton of the Forestry division somewhere in the field.
In a May 26 letter to his mother Birchird Van Loan says he awaits the outcome of life and takes up a captain’s role behind the front. He is with the first company field artillery, handling supply wagons and ammunition rush to the front line. Charley Plessenger and Robert Thompson report good health after time on the firing line. The six weeks summer session at the Oregon State Normal began Monday.
