Debate over a sewer bond plan in Independence centers on charter compliance as Mayor Jones and the City Council clash over the method to proceed. A Portland syndicate led by S. M. McDaniel is prospecting for oil on the Whiteaker place near Dallas. F. L. Zeigler, an expert driller from Bakersfield California, has been on site for days and is erecting a large derrick. This marks the first active operation toward commencing on completion.
Polk County public schools closed the year with a census of 4127 and 2825 enrollment, up from 269 in 1908. Average attendance per 1000 reached 2528, with total receipts at 78136.47 and disbursements 66249.86. Supt. H. C. Seymour praised for leadership. salaries rose from 60 to 66 dollars. Local laundry owner Mr. Johnson advocates home industry and hires local labor for printing and installation work.
W E Bevens manager of the Jacobson DeHaven Co farm in Highland district five miles south of town reports major upgrades. A new 40 by 60 foot two story barn will be built using about 50 000 feet of lumber, followed by an eight room horse barn costing around 8000 dollars. Architect W L Baker of McMinnville leads the work with twelve men employed and more to come. crop prospects are excellent and an old fashioned barn warming is hinted to occur in about two weeks.
