County voters show strong interest as officials project third terms. Notaries report heavy registration while Republicans and Democrats weigh primary bids. Names listed include County Clerk E M Smith Auditor W A Ayres Sheriff J M Grant and others with several candidates already eyeing the county judge and assessor posts.
A Wisconsin woman who had just received a box of Oregon flowers wrote a letter of surprise noting that Oregon’s climate is not drastically different from her home despite four feet of snow and subfreezing temperatures in that state.
Allen T. Clark of Monmouth Oregon advertises strong demand for wool and mohair this year paying the highest market price. Mohair sacks on hand and Bell Phone contact.
Congressman W. C. Hawley submits his petition for the Republican nomination in the Prat Congressional district. He pledges to push river and harbor appropriations, rural free delivery pay, veterans relief, agricultural development, public works, tariff reform, and no interference against agitators, with a clause promising service only for the public interest.
Polk County Observer reports 1910 tax schedule with a three percent discount if taxes are paid by March 15 and half of the tax due by April 3. Unpaid taxes incur a ten percent penalty plus two percent monthly interest. July 1 notices may trigger sales at public auction with advertising costs added.
Arthur R. Allen of Rickreall toured the county on Saturday in support of his candidacy for county assessor. He drew encouragement from Independence residents and was praised as an able young man with potential to make his mark.
Tom Moore of Cochran Georgia limped until using Bucklen’s Arnica Salve. He reports a bal gore on his instep healed by the salve, calling it a wonderful healer that cures sores ulcers boils burns cuts and more. Available at all druggists for 25 cents.
W H Devano of this city introduces a smoke consuming device intended to abate factory smoke in large cities. He claims the contrivance could benefit manufacturers and the public as he seeks patent protection in Washington DC. Devano lacks capital and seeks interested partners to finance the project.
A vintage advertisement promises fast relief for headaches with Dr Miles Antipain Pills. It emphasizes ease of use and effectiveness for any head discomfort.
Independence and Monmouth Railroad to run a motor car between Independence Salem and West Salem. A turntable must be built in Independence to start service by March. The motor car is a duplicate of the one on the Salem Falls City and Western line. An afternoon train will run with connections to the Southern Pacific.
Brick work on the new Ted Bank building is nearly complete. Purvine will finish the rooms below and the bank and bakery expect to occupy their respective spaces by April 1.
R. H. Knox and family returned home after four weeks in Spohime Washington. Knox met his sister from Minnesota at his brother’s home marking a first family reunion in over twenty years. Miss Evgenia McInturff of Salem visited with her brother H. F. McInturff during the past week.
At a meeting last week the Independence Driving Pores Association re elected its officers. Mr Wilson was named to promote the horse show tied to the June races. Aiming to display fast horses over the three day meet, the committee plans a strong program and entry of top animals.
Mrs Cox died last Saturday after a brief illness and was buried Monday in the I O O F cemetery. The funeral was at the Baptist church yesterday afternoon. She lived in the area for years and was highly regarded. Lille Mulheman, born in Schem Oregon September 1 1958, came to Independence with her parents and has lived near the city. She married C E Cox July 9 1908. Mrs Cox is survived by her husband and a six month old son along with her parents and family.
