Professors urge Oregon education growth at Independence Talk

Prof. Livingston of Forest Grove, ex-superintendent of the Wisconsin State Normal school, spoke to Independence teachers and patrons urging advancement in education especially in rural districts. He emphasized combined effort, manual training in Independence High, and the need for every citizen to support schools for stronger citizenship and local progress.

Entertainment praised at TM EB church program

A Friday evening event at the TM EB church drew a large audience. The program, including Heroes: from Dixie Land and local talent selections, was praised as instructive and entertaining by Mrs. Sylvia W. McGuire and others, though some attendees felt it fell short of expectations.

New Natomas Dredge 18 Operational at Rebel Hill Site

The Natomas Consolidated dredge No 18 began operations this week at Rebel Hill three miles from Volvom and a mile from Natoma. Built for about a quarter of a million dollars it runs with 15 cubic foot buckets and can move around 360000 cubic yards monthly.

Eighth Grade Examination Results Declared Across Schools

Only 26 percent of examinees passed all subjects in the recent eighth grade examination. Superintendent Seymour notes most students excel in all but one or two subjects, and lists the names of those who passed along with their schools.

Woodmen Hall Hosts Campaign Kickoff in Independence

The Woodmen of the World camp in Independence gathers at Woodmen Hall tonight to launch a Great Campaign for Membership. A class of 50 is expected, with prizes for candidates, a large banquet, and talks by State Organizer F. I Technor of Portland. Initiation fee reduced to 2.00, urging more applicants for forest benefits.

J G McIntosh has acquired a pen of five White Orpington pullets and one male from Corvallia. He claims leadership in fowls and values the purchase at 20000 dollars. The pullets lay daily and he plans rapid flock expansion.

New 25 Piece Band Formed In Independence

A 25 member band was organized in Independence on Tuesday evening, featuring top local musicians. Officials say the group will be ready to perform by spring, reviving the city's musical life after a period without a band.

Early Morning Bath: Horse Plunges Into Willamette Rescued

A horse aboard the steamer Potions at Independence Dock fell into the Willamette while being loaded. It was rescued with difficulty and returned to the dock wet and frightened, then safely loaded for Portland. The incident occurred as a Hood River party shipped horses from the area. A death notice for Miss Josephine Burch follows, noting her father Judge S. T. Burch of Rickreall and a lengthy illness. Her funeral is set for February 9 in Rickreall conducted by Rev. A. A. Wieter.

Independence Driving Club Elects Officers and Plans Meet

At a February meeting the Independence Driving Club elected W. W. Percival as president D. D. Byers as secretary R. R. McArmond as treasurer and managers A McLaughlin P. M. Kirkland and R. P. Dickinson. A four day meeting is set for June 21 to 24 with a hare show and three stake races including a harness race. The club will join an association for protection and promises the best meeting yet with details to come.

Two Farms Sold Near Huntley Place for 6000 and 6500

J. T. Huntley sold his 65 acre farm this week to a Mr. Miller for 6000. J. H. Arehart sold his adjoining 65 acre farm to a son of Mr. Miller for 6500. Both properties are well improved. Huntley plans to move to California. Arehart's plans are not known.

Newport Man In Illness At Depot In Dallas Call

Martin Byrley of Newport fell ill at the depot while waiting for a Dallas train. He experienced a spell of insanity tied to urinary trouble, was treated at a rooming house, then taken to Dallas for care. Doctors report rapid improvement and deny intoxication claims. Byrley is a respected Newport citizen and city council member.

Salem Falls City & Western push $100000 Willamette bridge

The Salem Falls City and Western asked the Oregon senate for authority to build a steel bridge across the Willamette at Salem costing over $100,000. The company also seeks depot grounds in the city and plans additions including a handsome depot. Construction hoped for spring or early summer with other improvements contemplated. Odd Fellows held degree work and served luncheon.
