Fully 26 percent of the filers have neglected to sign and verify their tax returns. Clyde G. Huntley, collector, warns that returns must be signed and sworn before an officer to be legally complete. Filing has begun and taxpayers have until March 16 to prepare and file, or face penalties for delinquency.
President Landers of the Oregon Normal School will be guest of honor at an informal dinner next Tuesday evening at Hotel Beaver. The Independence Retail Merchants association hosts the event and seeks his views on future grade school quarters as the Normal closely allies with local schools.
John Peters sold his prune ranch of 16 acres eight in prunes to G. F. Friesan of Dallas. Peters and family move to Lodi California after a public sale of household effects next Thursday. Friesan, from Ontario Canada, now owns the stock and farm equipment.
Willard E. Craven of Independence was named to the executive committee of the Oregon Retail Hardware and Implement Dealers Association at its Portland gathering last week. A. L. Jameson of McMinnville was re-elected president for the fourth straight year, with W. W. Baldwin of Klamath Falls as vice president and other board members including A. C. Hubbard Medford B. A. Kendall Redmond Otto G. Sappire Hermiston.
The war department withdraws the desertion charge against Leroy Stalnaker of Polk county Oregon. His name will be removed from the draft deserters list after a lengthy correction showing he served as Roy Stalnaker from November 27 1917 to October 6 1918 and failed to notify his local board of enlistment. The Independence American Legion pressed the matter for months and the Ninth Army Corps San Francisco confirms the correction.
H E K Whitney announces a Whitney Boys convention in Portland within April or May. All state members travel to Portland for a Friday to Sunday event with three concerts in the 4000 seat municipal auditorium. Chorus growth expected to exceed 2000 boys. under H R Underhill progress and weekly Monday high school meetings continue.
The Valley and Siletz Railroad bought a 60 foot gasoline car in Salt Lake City for use on the Independence to Valley route. It has a 150 horsepower six cylinder engine, baggage smoking and general compartments, and seats 50 passengers. R L McCredie sails to Salt Lake to bring it to Portland for painting and overhaul before service resumes. During his absence Casey's Jones leads the freight crew operating the gas car.
The Willamette valley endures an exceptionally cold spell that injures broccoli by 10 to 25 percent. Grower Jim Collins notes riverfront plants suffer more damage, while harvest remains about two months away. Broccoli has been a profitable, long established crop in the area.
Power service will be cut in Independence Sunday from 9 a.m. to shortly after noon while equipment work is done. A new bank of transformers will be installed at the plant and the gravel works connected to the Dallas high line to improve local service.
The Polk county circuit court set aside the divorce decree for Odo Emmenegeger after a petition by Mrs. Jessie Tamenegger. Emmenegeger, currently in penitentiary, was convicted of perjury in the divorce proceedings.
Joe Kizer who owns and operates a ranch near Albany and Mrs. Kizer visited with old friends here last Friday and Saturday. Kizer formerly worked the Dr. Ketchum place south of town.
Portland leader Hirs chberg will oversee the Independ ence district drive for a state kids home near Corvallis under the Woman's Christian Temperance union. The 245 acre site east of Corvallis will host orphaned and dependent children with OAC faculty support and a plan for cottages, school access, and vocational training.
F C Parker was appointed acting chief of police for Independence by Mayor R M Walker and confirmed by the city council at the Wednesday meeting. Parker, a former penitentiary guard, will begin his duties that night, with council approving police court regulation revisions and routine claims. The session adjourned to next Wednesday night.
W B Allen's residence in the district north of Greenwood was entirely destroyed by fire yesterday forenoon. A defective flue is attributed as the cause. The building was a large modern home and the loss is reported heavy.
Henry Ford announces a large price reduction on Fordsons claiming the new price is below current production costs. He predicts a rapid sales surge will drive costs down as output increases.
Mrs. Eliza J. Estes, a Polk County pioneer of nearly 65 years, died at her Albany home on January 27 after a 12 day illness at age 64. Funeral was conducted at the Independence Methodist church with Rev. Clemo, burial in E. P. cemetery near Monmouth. She requested the hymn I surrender all and the poem If I should die tonight read at services. Survived by husband B M Estes daughter Hattie Coquillette sister Anna Heath and brothers W D Elkins and J L Elkins.
Independence boy scouts about 20 strong select Mr. Vannice of the high school as their scout master. The high school gymnasium will be used by the boys on Tuesday nights each week, and the group welcomes his experience in scout work.
A showing of Alice in Hungryland will occur Sunday evening February 5 at 7 30 o'clock during a union church service under Near East Relief direction. The film by J J Handsaker of Portland depicts Armenian conditions and is suitable for children and adults. Mrs Reed will discuss after the film and Near East relief contributions are invited.
J. E. Buck a Buena Vista area farmer will conduct a public sale on his farm Friday Feb 10 selling four horses 12 cows other stock and farming implements. He plans future arrangements may include moving to Independence.
