Hop pickers move toward Independence’s famed hop center amid supply and demand pressures. A New York dealer’s actions, rising prices, and expected profits for growers shape the 1911 harvest as workers anticipate higher wages and broader market demand.
Cap Skinner invited the Owl Whist Club to a long standing picnic on the riverbank. A crowd gathered with baskets and ice cream for a four mile ride to the launch Loulae. Fried chicken coffee and other foods were enjoyed, a twenty yard dash crowned J Coote winner, and the evening closed with plans to meet again.
Mr. 8 T Merrill, a leading timber dealer of Oregon and California, notes Oregon's timber wealth. He cites four hundred billion feet of merchantable saw timber across red, yellow and white fir, cedar, hemlock, larch, spruce, and sugar pine. Oregon holds the nation’s largest standing timber, with rising demand and improving logging methods making timber lands a safe, profitable investment.
Leaf orders for oak ash and fir card wood are to be left at Hanna Bros with delivery when desired at current prices. S W Leonard notes this order form.
Weather from July 1 to 15 added millions of bushels to the Pacific Northwest wheat outlook. Rain in earlier drought areas aided yields, with Oregon Washington and Idaho seen producing a near record harvest. Forecasters expect overall three state output to reach about 60 000 000 bushels, with some regions still vulnerable to late weather. The grain market mood improves as optimism returns on a large, record nearing crop.
A baby boy was welcomed into the home of Mr and Mrs Fred Wilshire. Both mother and child are reported in favorable condition. The Wilshires came from England a couple of years ago and now reside in Independence where Mr Wilshire has worked for Hanna Bros the past year. He is noted for his energetic work for the Commercial Club.
Concrete work from the steel bridge to C Street and from Main to the railroad on Co Street has been laid and should be ready in a week or ten days. About seventy five workers are employed and the entire pavement is expected by the twenty fifth of the month.
Local farmer D M Riggie of Independence reports his milk tested by a physician shows a large quantity of strychnine. Neighbors speculate on motives as the community denounces the cowardly act and hopes for truth and peace to return.
Mr W H Park and Mrs Alice Mc Gowen married last Sunday August 13 at Mrs Baldwins home in this city Rev Arthur Blackstone of the Baptist Church officiated Only a few intimate friends attended Afterward warm congratulations were exchanged and light refreshments served Baptist friends serenaded the couple at their new home Monday night A pleasant time followed with singing and a luncheon as guests offered best wishes for a long and happy marriage.
John Dragount of Walla Walla was badly injured when his clothing fouled a thresher’s cylinder. He is hospitalized with severe injuries including a torn arm socket, multiple broken ribs, a crushed leg, a crushed skull, and a cut artery. His condition is critical and not expected to survive.
President Ackerman of the State Norms School visited Salem on Tuesday to monitor business interests and said he has received many letters from prospective students forecasting a large enrollment when the school opens in September.
