A farmer describes land cleanup with sheep and culling practices to improve lambing. He emphasizes buying good registered rams, preparing for winter lambs, keeping ewes warm, and managing feeding with oats straw to supplement grain while avoiding stomach issues.
A rural note laments farmers discarding old apple trees for timber trade profits. It recalls an 80 year old grandfathered orchard, naming an apple still bearing, and describes a gavel made from two ancient trees. Nearby pear seedlings show good fruit as pioneers preserve landmarks and grafted lineages.

The Seed Laboratory warned that imported forage plant seeds examined in 1911 often yielded low vitality and high weed seed content. Analyses of 18 lots totaling 226 780 pounds showed pure seed ranging from 23 to 64.2 percent and germination from 15 to 77 percent. Costs per 100 pounds of viable seed were vastly higher than import prices. A Canada sample had about half unsalable seed and one lot contained 135 000 weed seeds per pound.
Massachusetts leads cranberry production with about 400000 bushels annually. New Jersey follows with around 250000 bushels and Wisconsin ranks third with about 100000 bushels.
