A garbled column weaves a humorous night scene in a neighborhood. A tom cat’s return triggers chatter about reforming life, post offices, dances, and a loud midnight chorus. Locals reference Lovers Lane, Star Theater, and a large peanut feast mixed with oddball anecdotes.
The Steam Launch Independence of Skinner Bros broke down on return from Salem. The gasoline launch Louise refused to run until repairs were finished. Fifteen to twenty passengers waited, some rode with Plar old Fitchard in a car to Salem where a tire burst, delaying others. The Louise then started, and Independence was repaired and returned to service by evening.
A cheerful group from Eugene traveled to Tillamook in a Mitchell touring car last Saturday. They refueled in town and continued their journey rejoicing, expecting to reach their destination that evening after leaving Eugene in the morning.
Marriage licenses have been issued to Karl B Kugel and Mary H Kimball L Alred and Annie Blanchard and Edward Kucher and Sarah Hodge.
City council meets with most members present including Hoffman in mayoral chair. Recorder Robinson plans resignation. Bohannon leads push to repair roof before tin replacement. council authorizes ten dollar monthly stipends for Robinson during transition and sets August 8 adjourned session for notices and election prep.
George Conkey and wife traveled to Dallas to attend the funeral of their nephew Frank Ellis killed by an accidental discharge of his own revolver in the Josephing cave near Grants Pass. Ellis, son of Mrs. Arthur Moore of Independence, was born in Dallas and had lived in Grants Pass where he ran a drug store for his father M. D. Ellis of Dallas. The funeral drew many friends after the remains arrived in Dallas Wednesday.
The article notes contracts for 40 000 pounds by Julius Pincus and 56 000 pounds by D B Taylor at 20 cents a pound. Walker Bros McLaughlin and Burton fretweed offer 2 cents, while both contract parties have similar remaining quantities to speculate on.
A valuable horse owned by Mp Sacre of Monmouth broke its neck after fright during a gasoline motorcar procession to Independence Masonic lodge. While a Dallas-bound crowd rode past, a black horse in the rear stumbled and died from a broken neck when the herd was startled near the track.
