Discovery gains reports from Kuskokwim as mail routes struggle
Frank Cooper says Nixon Fork to Discovery trip reveals scarce grub, with residents leaving lands. Nichols and Martella reach McGrath May 20 after a hazardous trek, four dogs drowned, two crew fed barely, and water waist deep across routes. White Dog Smith unloads 800 pounds of mail at Roanne and plans boat delivery. High water damages McGrath, sinking wireless station masts and flooding homes, forcing residents to live on boats. Mail arrival at Takotna not expected until June 20.
