Seventeen French Orphans Adopted by Local Residents

Seventeen fatherless French children have been cared for by residents in two weeks with funding for thirteen of them sent for a year by Mrs. R. Peck, chairwoman of the local committee. Money for the remaining four will be dispatched by the next mail. Credit is given to Mrs. Peck, Mrs. Frank Dawson, and Miss M. Hally for organizing the effort, with numerous subscribers listed in support.

Newport shaken by explosion near Virginia capes

A heavy explosion at sea near the Virginia capes rattled Newport I S. Two men, Mike Ross and Pete Masich, were harvesting wood 40 miles above the power plant when they found a bear carcass and related meat purchases. Work delivering 5000 cords to Discovery is paused due to low creek water. 4000 cords go to Riley Investment and the rest to Beaton & Donnelley. Also a French merchant vessel reported a sub encounter off the capes with a nearby firefight.

America’s War Toll in June Casualty Report Totals

Washington reports General Pershing noting 108 casualties with 40 killed or died of wounds and 52 wounded, plus three in aero plane accidents. June 11 adds 130 casualties with 20 killed or died of wounds and 91 wounded, followed by June 13 figures of 188 casualties and 28 killed or died of wounds. June 14 shows marine losses in France at 62 with 14 killed or died of wounds and 43 wounded severely.
