Kenwood Semifinalists Named in National Merit Program
Kenwood Academy announced five semifinalists for the 14th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program. Karen Brown, Amber Cheatham, Carlos Hernandez, Edwin Phillips, and Alice Thompson are among over 60,000 Black students who applied after taking the 1976 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test.

The Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference Environment Committee unanimously endorsed resurfacing and rehabilitation of South Lake Shore Drive. Critics note safety flaws and plan debates include pedestrian safety gaps between 53rd and 67th streets and the proposed New Jersey wall. An IDOT public hearing is slated for late in the year with possible construction next spring.

Music lessons in Hyde Park schools expand again
For the eleventh year the Joint PTA Music Program offers recorder, flute and violin lessons in Hyde Park grade schools. Volunteers hire teachers, schools provide space, and parents pay minimal fees. New students are recruited by classroom demonstrations, with lessons starting the week of October 17 at Harte, Murray, Ray, Shoesmith, and St. Thomas schools.
